This monography is the complex investigation of small plant populations. On the basis of individual and group parameters’ analysis the peculiarities of structure, strategy and viability of small plant populations compare to large populations and metapopulations of rare species of highlands of the Ukrainian Carpathians are found out. The extents of small populations’ definition is given. Their age and spatial structures, variability of ontogenesis and individual vitality, peculiarities of intrapopulation diversity, means of reproduction, interference with neighbour species, etc. are ascertained. Buffer mechanisms and adaptive potential, origin algorithm, forming and losing of populations’ viability are discovered. Priority features for the evaluating of vaibility of small populations are emphasized. Threat factors are ascertained and protection measures for small populations of rare plant species in highlands of the Ukrainian Carpathians are substantiated.

The book presents results of studies on changes in population structure of rare and endemic plant and animal (amphibian and lower crustacean) species in the high-mountain zone of the Ukrainian Carpathians under current conditions of transformation in their environment. Structural shifts in the populations on the systemic level were established and the role of their components in functioning and maintaining viability under natural and anthropogenic factors, particularly climatic change, secondary restoration successions and recreation was determined. Factors of threat were revealed and problems and ways of conservation of rare population, specific and coenotic diversity in the high-mountain zone were defined. For scientists in the field of ecology, lecturers and students of natural science specialties, and experts in nature conservation.
