Course description

The aims and objectives of the course “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Plants” is a deepening of the basic knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology of plants, fluent usage of English terminology in area of plant science; complex knowledge for practical theoretical and experimental work in the field of plant biology with understanding of the structure and functional activity of the plant organism and taking into account the main trends in experimental research in this area.

The graduate student will know:

basic concepts and terms related to plant biochemistry and physiology; structure, properties and significance of the main classes of organic substances for plant physiological processes in normal and stressful conditions; main metabolic ways of synthesis, transformation and breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins of lipids of plants; basic principles of a secondary metabolites transformations under the environmental influence; possibilities of practical use of secondary metabolism substances in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, etc.

will be able:

qualitatively and quantitatively analyze experimental and theoretical data obtained by biochemical methods and methods of molecular biology, freely using the appropriate terminology in English. Be able to optimize a research plant experimental systems: using the knowledge on the structure and function of macromolecules interpret such biological phenomena as growth, plant development and responces to biotic and abiotic factors.
